Walnut Hull Natural Dye, 4 oz.
Shepherd Textiles 4 oz. Walnut Hull Natural Dye
Shepherd Textiles Walnut Hull Natural Dye contains the coarsely ground dried hulls of juglans n., the black walnut. The hulls that cover the walnut shell are rich in a compound called juglone. Juglone actually evolved as a defense mechanism--it is toxic to other trees, and when it seeps out of the roots it prevents other trees from growing within five or ten feet of a black walnut. Juglone also happens to be a potent natural dye, and walnut hulls have been used for centuries across the eastern U.S. to dye wool various shades of brown. Dried walnut hulls can produce a variety of very natural-looking brown shades. At a lower concentration of about 25% weight-of-fabric (WOF), they give creamy milk chocolate and cappuccino shades. At a higher concentration of 100% WOF, and with the addition of iron to the dyebath, they can give rich toffee and dark chocolate hues. Note that walnut hulls work best on protein fibers like wool and silk--plant fibers like cotton will develop only pale browns. Unlike other brands, our black walnut hulls are carefully sorted before being ground to make sure that the powder contains only the hulls and none of the shells, which have no value as a dye. At 25% WOF this powder will dye up to a pound of fiber to a creamy coffee shade. At 100% WOF, they will dye up to 1/4 lb. of fiber to a dark brown with the addition of a little iron. Final results will depend on the type of fiber and the depth of mordanting used. Walnut Hull does not require a mordant on wool and silk, but using alum will improve lightfastness and slightly deepen the shade. For wool and silk: pre-mordant with 12% weight-of-fabric (WOF) alum. Fill dye pot with hot water, weigh out alum, add, and stir until dissolved. Add pre-soaked fiber, heat to 170F for an hour, then allow to cool to room temperature. Remove fibers and dispose of mordant liquid according to local regulations. For cotton and linen: Simmer for one hour with 5% weight-of-fabric (WOF) Quebracho Wood or another strong tannin. When cool, rinse and mordant with alum as described above. *Always wear gloves and eye protection when working with mordants or mordant liquor. Fill your dye pot with warm water, leaving enough room for your fibers. Weigh out 25-30% weight-of-fabric (WOF) of Walnut Hull powder. Sprinkle into the dye bath and stir well to mix. Heat to 180F for half an hour, then take off the heat and let cool to room temperature. For best results, cover and steep overnight. When cool, strain the brown liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to get out the bits of hull. Return the strained liquid to the pot. Your dyebath is now ready for dyeing. Place your pre-soaked, pre-mordanted fibers into the dyebath. Make sure there is plenty of water for everything to move around freely. Heat to 180F and maintain for two hours. Stir gently every 20 minutes or so to make sure fiber dyes evenly. Be careful not to agitate wool too much, otherwise it may felt. After two hours, remove dye pot from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Carefully remove dyed fiber. Rinse gently in lukewarm water, then hang up to dry in the shade to help the color set. Avoid direct sunlight, which may fade the color before it has had time to set. For final rinsing, rinse thoroughly with a PH-neutral fabric detergent like Synthrapol according to manufacturer's directions. Use plenty of detergent; it will not remove color that has already bonded to the fiber. After rinsing, squeeze gently to make sure water runs clear. Hang up to dry in the shade. CAUTION: Natural dyes like Walnut Hull may bleed if the fiber is not thoroughly rinsed after dyeing.
